A potted history of Magik Bullet

Lois Dancing

Since Magik Bullet’s creation in 2004, it has rapidly become one of the
South West’s best loved club events. Magik Bullet was born in August 2004 and
has since built up a reputation for being one of the most musically diverse
and friendliest events in Plymouth. From small beginnings as a breaks night,
Magik Bullet began to embrace music styles such as techno, electro house and
whatever else got the floor moving.

It’s a well known fact that the best clubs are often found tucked away from
the booze drenched sprawl of the city centre and its unwelcome passing
trade. There’s technique in Leeds, Sankeys in Manchester and as hundreds of
devoted clubbers have found out – the White Rabbit in Bretonside bus
station, Plymouth. Home to Magik Bullet, a vibrant, friendly, night. Hidden
from the beery, dreary, leery, hoi polloi, clubs like this are frequented
solely by folk who want to be there, and are guaranteed to kick off every
time.

On the 2nd Saturday of every month residents Damo, Paradigm and Dicey are
joined by DJ’s from all over the UK, who bring their unique style of music
to the eager, appreciative dance floor. DJ’s such as Matt Brown from the
legendary Sancho Panza have shared the spotlight with crowd favourites – Far
Too Loud. Acts such as Tom Real and Baobinga + ID have set the dance floor
on fire and have rated the crowd as one of their favourite ever. Underground
talent has been nurtured and invited back time and time again.

Plymouth is a city best known for its past as one of the rave capitals of
the UK. In the early 90′s acts such as The Prodigy and Orbital were part of
Plymouth’s fledgling rave scene. Nights such as Cultural Vibes introduced a
generation of clubbers to underground house. Sasha and Digweed were
residents at the influential Scream night held at the Warehouse in the mid
1990s. Moving forward to 2004, clubbers had a choice of hard house and drum
n bass, with not much in between. Magik Bullet brought underground house and
breaks – sounds that were being heard all over the rest of the country, to a
new and appreciative audience.

Magik Bullet’s formula has always been to support the nationwide underground
whilst still keeping a keen eye on the wealth of local talent available. If
Magik Bullet were a child it would be one with ‘ADD’, constantly changing
and evolving before the crowd has a chance to get bored. One of the only
events in Plymouth to have a fan base that stretches right the way through
the South West and online around the world. There is a real community feel
at the events and online. Magik Bullet has had a strong internet presence
from the beginning, with new DJ mixes being added monthly and a vibrant
Facebook group.

Magik Bullet events have evolved into a full on audio visual spectacular
thanks to the considerable talent of Alex Alphawave. The crowd is also one
of the most diverse and interesting you will find in the UK. Students mix it
up with 25-40 year old ‘gravers’. Crusties rub shoulders with glammed up
girls; in fact, you are almost guaranteed to make new friends on the night.
Since the introduction of the smoking ban, Magik Bullet’s numbers have
increased, bucking the national trend, with an excellent outside smoking
area and security that are some of the friendliest around.

Magik Bullet stopped doing regular events in March 2009 and now produce

the occasional one-off party. Join us on the 29th August and 31st October to

be part of our history.
